Maths at Woodland

Maths is one of the key elements of the primary curriculum. At Woodland Primary all children take part in daily Maths lessons which are taught in line with the National Curriculum.  As of September 2014, schools across the country are teaching the new and revised National Curriculum.

In the new and revised Maths Curriculum there are many changes including a larger focus on number.

The New Curriculum is set out into 6 sections:

Number - including Number and Place Value, Addition and Subtraction, Multiplication and Division and fractions (including Decimals in Years 4, 5 and 6)

Ratio and proportion (Year 6 only)

Algebra (Year 6 only)

Geometry - including Position and Direction

Guided Reasoning

The national curriculum for mathematics aims to ensure that all pupils.....become fluent.....reason mathematically.....and can solve problems.' (National Curriculum 2014)

The new National Curriculum places increased emphasis on children's ability to 'reason mathematically' and 'problem solve by applying their understanding'. It is not possible to teach children the answers to all mathematical questions, we can however teach them the skills set which will make this possible. Children need to be given the opportunity to further develop mathematical ideas and concepts in open ended tasks. By doing so a child will deepen their understanding  of math's and begin to make the very important links between concepts and apply these links in a range of situations.

Guided Group Reasoning is a means by which you can make this happen.

Guided Reasoning currently takes place in Years 1 and 6 each day. Sessions half an hour long and are split into two parts - calculation and reasoning. During the calculation part of the lesson children practice their four rules of calculatiion (addition, subtraction, multiplicaion and division). The reasoning part of the lesson is based on the main maths focus for that week. During reasoning children are encouraged to problem solve and reason answers both verbally and orally. Since starting our Guided Reasoning session we have seen huge successes across the school.
