2018 - 2019

Summer 2

In English, we are beginning a fantastic book named Arthur and the Golden Rope, written by Joe Todd Stanton. The children will engage in discussions around the detailed         illustrations in the book. The children will use these discussions to support their writing to produce application letters, character descriptions, newspaper reports, diary entries,  poetry and narratives. We will continue to embed SPaG elements such as direct speech,  conjunctions and fronted adverbials in our writing.

In Maths, we will firstly focus our rounding skills making sure we can round to the nearest 10, 100 and 1000 as well as rounding decimals to the nearest whole number. We will then work on interpreting a range of bar charts, time graphs and tables where we will be    answering a range of sum, comparison and difference questions. We will look at          identifying different types of angles and how to measure them. We will spend some time consolidating what we have learnt throughout the year and applying these skills into real life contexts, word problems and other problem solving.

Our science topic this half term is ‘What happens to the food that we eat?’ Within this topic, the children will lean about healthy, balanced diets and why it is important for this. We will then begin to look at the human digestive system and the roles and functions of different organs involved in the process. We will look at the important role of the teeth in the digestive system and why it is important  to look after our teeth. The children will then begin to think about different animals and why they have different teeth, we will look at food chains and diets of different animals.

In Topic, we will be exploring the question ‘From Romans to Vikings: How have they changed England?’ Throughout this topic, the children will discover what it is like to be invaded as they explore what happened in England through the invasions of the Romans and Vikings. We will explore artefacts and why they are so important to historians to piece together what happened in the past. The children will investigate what the Romans  and Vikings brought to England and how we still use these things today. The children will     consider how life today may have been different if these invasions didn't occur.


Summer 1

In English, we will continue to read the book ‘Noah Barleywater Runs Away’ by John Boyne. Through reading the text as a class, we will continue to consider the character’s feelings and actions at different points in the story. The children will continue to write in a wide range on genres including devising a treaty, a diary entry, a letter and a narrative. Through these genres we will develop our use of conjunctions, fronted adverbials and direct speech.

In Maths, we will continue multiplying and dividing by 10, 100 and 1000. We will use our skills to convert between different units of measure for example mass, capacity and length.  We will also compare, order and calculate different measures before applying our skills to real life contexts. We will also solve problems involving converting time from seconds to minutes, minutes to hours, hours to days and days to weeks. Finally, we will plot coordinates and translate these using left, right, up and down.

Within Science, we will continue to explore the question ‘How would we survive without water?’ through this question we will learn how to compare and group materials together, according to whether they are solids, liquids or gases. Observe that materials change state when they are heated or cooled, and measure or research the temperature at which this happens in degrees Celcius. Finally, we will identify the part played by evaporation and condensation in the water cycle and associate the rate of evaporation with temperature.

In Topic, we will continue to explore the question ‘Why do some people want to explore places beyond Rochdale?’ We will continue to plan expeditions in and beyond Rochdale. We will consider the seven wonders of the world and what it would take to visit one. As well as this, we will research Ranulph Fiennes and determine whether we believe he is the greatest British explorer of all time. As an exit point to our topic we will become explorers for the day in order to complete orienteering tasks.



Spring 2

In English, we are starting to read a new book entitled ‘Noah Barleywater Runs Away’ by John Boyne. Through reading the text as a class, we will focus on the character’s feelings and actions at different points in the story. The children will have lots of opportunities to write a variety of genres such as: newspaper reports, poetry, narratives, diary entries and letters. We will continue our Guided Reading sessions focussing on texts from a variety of genres in order to teach the skills necessary to read and comprehend different texts.


In Maths, we will firstly focus on multiplying and dividing mentally using our knowledge of place value and facts, followed by multiplying 3 numbers together. Next, we will will be finding 1000 more or less than any given number. We will consolidate our formal written method (column) to add and subtract up to 4 digit numbers. Following this, we will  learn all about symmetry in 2D shapes, presented in different orientations and complete a simple symmetric figure with respect to a specific line of symmetry. Finally we will learn what happens when we multiply or divide a number by 10 and 100, focussing on identifying the value of the digits in the answer as ones, tenths and hundredths.

Next, we will investigate how to plan a journey back to school from somewhere in our locality using maps and different modes of transport. Moving away from Rochdale, we will learn about the islands around the British Isles, thinking about how they differ to Rochdale and why we would want to visit them. After that, we will look at the seven wonders of the world. We will look at where they are and why people want to go to visit them. Finally, we will look at planning our own expedition to somewhere in the world.


Spring 1

In English, we will be focussing our reading and writing on the text ’Belonging’. The children will have lots of opportunities to write, for example: diary entries, setting descriptions, letters and short stories to convey the change in the environment and express their interpretation of the book.

In Maths, we will be focussing on fractions, including equivalent, converting fractions into decimals and adding and subtracting fractions with the same denominator. We will learn how to describe positions on a 2D grid as co-ordinates; find the area of a rectilinear shapes and to use the formal written method to divide 2 and 3 digit numbers by one digit.

Our Science focus this half term is “Why is the sound that is made by “Oasis” enjoyed by so many?”. Through working scientifically, we will explore a range of scientific questions including: how a sound is made; how it travels from the source to our ears; explore the correlation between the volume of a sound and the strength of the vibrations that produced it.

Our topic enquiry is “Why is Manchester the coolest place to live? “ Through this topic we will look at the history Manchester and how lives were different to ours now. We will study and create our own artwork in the style of L.S Lowry. We will learn about the geographical location of Manchester, along with the physical and human features. We will research a famous Mancunian who has changed the course of history and present this to another class. Through our PSHE lessons, we will look at the current affairs that are in the news and unpick them in many class discussions.

Autumn 2

In English, we will be focussing our reading and writing on the text ’One Plastic Bag’ by Miranda Paul. The aims are to explore themes and issues around plastic in the environment. The children will explore this through a range of  creative writing, and explore this with confidence through writing for a real purpose and audience.

In Maths, we will be focussing on Multiplication, both factor pairs and written methods. In measure, we will be learning how to measure perimeter of a range of different shapes. Through out statistics work we will be creating and interpreting bar charts and line graphs. We will  introduce Roman Numerals up to one hundred  and recap time from the previous term.

Our Science focus this half term is “How could we cope without electricity for one day?” Through this we will learn which appliances need electricity to work; we will construct electrical circuits and able to identify and describe whether a lamp will light in a simple series circuit; learn how switches can open and close circuits and explore making switches using our knowledge of conductors and insulators.

Our topic enquiry is “How has plastic waste changed our planet?” Through this topic we will explore current affairs related to the impact of plastic on our environment. We will use map work to explore how rivers and seas are changing around the globe; research the history of plastic and why it was invented; research debate the pros and cons of recycling, and why some countries are more successful than others. Towards the end of the topic, we will use all of our knowledge to create a persuasive podcast.

Autumn 1


In Literacy, we are using the book Charlotte’s Web as a stimulus for our writing.

Throughout the half term, your children will write in a variety of genres including: poetry, diary entries, story maps, fact files, character descriptions and narrative descriptions. As a final piece, the children will draft and write a narrative with characters, settings and a plot.

In Mathematics this half term we are learning to: count backward through zero to include negative numbers; count forwards and backwards in multiples of 6,7,925 and 1000; add and subtract numbers with up to 4 digits using the formal written of column where

appropriate; estimate and use inverse operations to check answers to a calculation; compare and classify shapes, including quadrilaterals and triangles; read, write and

convert time between analogue and digital 12 and 24 hour clocks.

Within Science this term we are learning to work scientifically through the question ‘Which wild animals and plants thrive in your locality?’. We will be accessing the area of Living things and their Habitats with a strong focus on: recognising that living things can be grouped in a variety of ways; explore and use classification keys to help group, identify and name a variety of living things in their local and wider environment and recognise that environments can change and this can sometimes pose danger for living things.

Our new topic this term is ‘Who were the earliest lawmakers?’. We will be researching about who made the early laws and why they were necessary; finding out about how laws have changed throughout the years and discussing whether they are morally right; finding out how punishments have changed throughout the last 750 years; through

elements of drama we will be re-enacting a 17th/18th Century law court and also to use different tones to draw and shade accurately.

Entry Point

As we are going to be learning all about the Romans and the Vikings, we had the opportunity to explore real life artifacts. We used the enquiry skills that we have been developing to try and work out what they were, where they were from and what they were used for. Some of us even dressed up as a Roman.


Summer 1

During P.E. this week we completed amn orienteering course. We were given a map of the school grounds and some clues as to where each of the markers were. When we arrived at a marker there were questions on them which we had to answer.

Water cycle junkmodelling

As part of our science work, we have been learning about the water cycle. To consolidate our learning, we created models for the water cycle showing each part of it and why it was important.

What makes chocolate melt?

Today, we investigated the melting points of different substances. We used hot water and thermometers to predict and find out what temperatures things melted.

Science Week

In Year 4, the children researched the Computer Scientist Tim Berners-Lee. We spent lots of time learning about the World Wide Web and how important is has become in our daily lives. After that, we became computer programmers and coded our own animations and games using Scratch. All the children really enjoyed the week and we have spotted some future Scientists too!

Entry Point

The children had the challenge of making a boat which could float using a range of recyclable materials from school and home. As an added challenge, the children were asked to design a boat which could hold the greatest weight.


1/2/2019 & 4/2/2019


Year 4 thoroughly enjoyed this year’s trip to Castleshaw where we learnt about the Roman Empire and how the Romans invaded the land surrounding. We looked at artefacts that have taught us about how the Romans lived here around 2000 years ago. We also had a go at making Roman bread, measuring out using cups as the Romans would have done. 



We absolutely love our music lessons in Year 4; on Mondays, we take part in a big sing where we learn lots of new, current songs as well as old ones too! We are also learning how to play the P Bone in our music lessons which is tricky but lots of fun. 



Sharing persuasive writing with Year 3

Through our English lessons, we have explored what it means to belong to an area or a place. We have been focussing our learning on a book called Belonging, which is about a run-down city. We write persuasive leaflets to persuade others to help change the city for the better. We loved sharing our work with Year 3 as they are great listeners and give amazing feedback. 



Freddy Fit

We took part in Freddy Fit’s circuit training this half term. We were hula-hooping, star jumping, doing sit-ups, lunges, squats and many more! This session made us extremely tired because we worked so hard!



Science Entry Point – What makes a sound?

For our entry point to our new science topic ‘Why is the sound made by Oasis enjoyed by so many?’ we investigated how sounds are made by playing different instruments including a guitar, tambourine, triangle, castanets, xylophone and many others! We discovered that hitting, twanging and blowing instruments cause vibrations which travel to our ears.



Topic Entry Point – Jackson Pollock Style Painting.

For the entry point tour new topic ‘Why is Manchester the coolest place to live?’ We looked famous Mancunian musicians and decided to create album art similar to The Stone Roses. We used a range of colours and tools to create artwork similar to that of Jackson Pollock’s.
