Throughout the spring term, we have had many writing opportunities inspired by Farm Boy by Michael Morpurgo and Charlotte’s Web by E L White. We have written lots of character and setting descriptions, got in to role of different characters, practiced using speech and creating dialogue, created emotion graphs to infer a character’s feelings, written alternative endings, created leaflets linked to recycling and saving the plane, and written poems. The amount of writing opportunities this term has allowed the children to be creative with their writing, practice and apply their grammar skills from their SPaG sessions and they have all shown great improvement!
Geography
In our Geography lessons, we have been learning all about farming through our ‘Sow, Grow and Farm’ project. We have learnt about different types of farming, looked at some case studies, and have debated whether food should be transported from abroad or whether we should eat more local food.
Nature’s Art Workshop
Year 5 have been lucky enough to have a real artist - Michelle Taube - deliver a workshop linked to their project 'Nature's Art'. In the workshop, the children practiced their sketching skills, used a range of paints to practice tints, tones and shades before eventually creating nature inspired piece of artwork. The children thoroughly enjoyed it and it has inspired many children to think about a career in art.
Design & Technology
As part of our Design and Technology project, ‘Eat The Seasons’, we have learnt about seasonal vegetables, what seasonality means, examples of seasonal fruit and vegetables and the benefits of seasonal fruit and vegetables. We then tasted a range of fruit and vegetables and had to comment on taste, texture, appearance and rate it out of five! We were a big fan of pomegranates and mango but not so much with leeks!
Recycling Workshop
This week, Year 5 took place in a Recycling Workshop, where they learnt all about the importance of the 4 R's: reduce, recycle, reuse and recover. They learnt about which items can be reused and recycled, and which bins different items should and shouldn't go in. The children had lots of fun and received a certifcate and a bookmark for taking part!
Toatie art
As part of our Shang Dynasty project, we have been learning all about Taoties. We have been research them, we sketched them, and then we were able to make and paint some using different casting techniques.
Reindeer Run
We had so much fun completing our reindeer run for spring hill hospice, we raised lots of money for the charity and had a great time doing it!!
Shang Dynasty Day
Year 5 took part in Shang Dynasty Day where they participated in lots of different activities linked to their project 'Dynamic Dynasties'. They enjoyed a history/drama workshop which was delivered by ‘One Day’ company. The children also learnt to write their name in Chinese, created China-inspired artwork and researched geographical facts about China. The children had learned lots of information and had lots of fun!
PSHE
In our PSHE lessons this week, the children have been continuing their learning on rewards and consequences. The children created their own games using objects, and then we discussed why it is important to have rules. We applied this to our everyday lives and talked about the importance of rules in our school, our community and the world
Science
In our science lessons this week, the children learnt the difference between mass and weight, and that mass is how much matter an object has whereas weight is to do with its gravatational force. We investigated how much gravitational force different objects in the classroom had by using Newton Meter and compared our results!
Art
In our art lessons this week, the children looked at perspective drawings and landscapes. They sketched their perspective landscape, some which were inspired by our current class book 'Bronze and Sunflower', and shaded it in. They focused on using different techniques for tints and shading.
History
In our first History topic, the children were looking at chronology. We researched when the Shang dynasty was, and when other dynasties happened in history. We sorted our timelines into the correct order and then made posters to summarise what we have learnt. These will go on display in the classroom help us with our future learning. In our art and design lesson this week, the children were learning about tints, tones and shades. We experimented with different colours to see what we could make.
Design Technology
To start our new topic ‘dynamic dynasties’ year 5 have started making moving zodiac animals. We have learnt that compressed air can be used to move things and these are called pneumatic devices. We have planned what ours are going to look like, made prototypes and made and evaluated our final design!
In this lesson, we created our own box that can talk using pneumatic systems! We used our plan from the previous lesson and the resources available to make our toy. Throughout the lesson, we had to assess and evaluate our plan and pneumatic toy to make sure it would work.
