Spring 2

Part 1 of our Mother's Day project was to make some salt dough. The children looked at measurements, pouring and mixing the ingredients. Once they had mixed the dough with a spoon, they then got their hands busy to knead it and make sure it had all blended together.

Once the dough was fully mixed and the children had played with it for a while, squashing and rolling it, it was stored in airtight containers waiting for the next steps. (It was used to make flowers)

Part 2 of the project was for the children to decorate the flowers in order for them to take them home as gifts. They were presented with a picture of a flower and some paint. The task was to select the colours which matched the picture. All children did a great job and ended up with a lovely flower to take home.

We looked at occupations and what some people did for us. The children had to listen to clues and then had to select the correct person. Then we looked at uniforms. Using wooden people with magnetic accessories, the children were select the items of clothing to make the uniforms for certain jobs.

For one of our Attention Autism 'Bucket Time' sessions, we used a variety of fruits to make the parts of a dinosaur. Miss Stannard demonstrated first and then it was over to the children. They made their own dinosaurs and had the chance to taste the different fruits.

The children had a great time making their own sandwiches. They got to choose what they wanted to put on them. They had a go at slicing their own tomatoes and spreading butter on their bread. Then once their sandwich was complete, they wrapped it in foil and stored it in the fridge, so that they could take it home at the end of the day. Then they had the chance to taste some of the ingredients.

In the Orchard this week, we have been delving into the word 'make'. We have used the word in sentences and we have also been learning the sign to go along with it. During our session we watched a video which encouraged the children to use their hands to make shapes such as a circle, triangle and a square. One of our little friends was very good at this and shows us what he can make using his hands long after the session has finished. Another one of our little friends took a different route and used mark making to make the shapes. He drew a circle in order to create a face.

Our children were given an opportunity to let their creativity flow. They were provided with a template, feathers, paper, felt, pipe cleaners plus more. They were able to decide which way up they wanted their monsters to go and also what materials they wanted to use to add character to their monsters. At the end they all looked very different but all were fabulous. Well done boys!

We like to make our Attention Autism sessions as fun and as engaging as possible. The children respond very well to this session and like to get involved when it is their turn. We worked through the stages of exploration and then onto the final act. We used cotton pads, soap and food colouring to make the colour seep out into the water.
