2024-2025 What have we been doing?

English Book Monitoring

Today we looked a sample of English books from across school. The children used the school’s monitoring documents to take out their own monitoring of English books.

The children provided reasons for their judgements and comments to help improve English books across school. The children worked in groups to do this and looked at books that were not in their year group, however used their own experiences of English being taught at Woodland to provided further feedback.

Some of the comments made were:

This was evident in all books monitored and English ambassadors talked about this being good practice across the school.

English Ambassadors felt that handwriting in some books could be improved and that some children may need more support with handwriting.

English Ambassadors agreed that handwriting of adults in books and lesson was good.

English Ambassador noticed that rulers were not always used and talked about the use of rubbers and whether they could be used if a child used pencil as sometimes children find it hard to continue writing once they have made a mistake.

This was evident in most books monitored however the children found a couple of examples where writing was not started at the margin and therefore they felt like this needed to be addressed.

Feedback will now be shared with SLT and shared within teacher’s unit meetings. Children will monitor again in March and hope to see improvements.

The English Ambassadors organised a magical map story writing and book cover competition! They had SO many fantastic stories and wonderful, creative front covers to judge ... they really were blown away by how many wonderful writers and artists we have here at Woodland! Here are some pictures of our talented and lucky winners with their certificates and prizes!
