Forest School

Whittling with knives

This week in Forest school we up leveled from our peeler whittling

We began knife work

we made sure we all had the correct ppe on

We were extremely safe, whittling away from ourselves

Building a bug hotel

Today the children made a start on making a bug hotel for our Forest school area

We carried and placed 3 pallets in a good, clear area

We places sticks and leaves inside, making the hotel inviting for our bug guests.

We will continue adding things to this over the next few weeks.

Roped in- Team challenge

Today I set a challenge for the children in Meadows

They had to use ropes, join them and suspend themselves for 20 seconds

The children found this tricky but kept going

The children failed the challenge and are brainstorming for another go

Whittling- peeler work

This week the children were introduced to whittling

We have started this block with whittling with peelers to get used to using blades

The children all took their time

Wearing protective gloves and working away from themselves

The children all concentrated and worked really well together

After they whittled their sticks they drew faces on their sticks

They look amazing!

The Japanese art of Hapa Zome

This week Meadows collected different types of leaves

They used a mallet to release the natural dyes

They look absolutely amazing

Spider web weaving

Today the children in Meadow's collected sticks from our forest school area.

We attached our sticks together with twine

We then weaved our spiders webs using string.

The waterproof shelter challenge

Today we set Meadows a waterproof shelter challenge

They had 30 minutes to use as much of thee den building kit as they need to make a shelter

The shelter needed to be tight, and waterproof

Miss Davies poured water over our shelters to make sure they were waterproof

They both were!

Dam building

This week our Forest school group have been learning about Dams.

Miss Davies set them a task to build their very own dams.

The children were only allowed to use natural resources from the forest school area.

We then tested their dams byy pouring water on one side.

This teams dam was successful!

We had a couple of leaks in this one.

Seed bombs

This week the chidren in the Meadow's and the Orchard made seed bombs

We spoke about these will help the insects and environment

We used top soil, clay, water and wild flower seeds

End of term toasted marshmallow treat

Orchard and Meadow's children have had a great half term.

As a special treat we lit a fire and toasted some treats.

We toasted the biggest marshmallows we could find!

It was the first time for some around the fire.

But we were all sensible and safe.

What a great way to end the half term.

Group fire lighting

This week we recapped safe fire lighting.

The children split into 2 groups

They set up the fire safety square

Each group set up a tray with wood and cotton wool.

The children each attempted to light the fire.

The children used a flint and steel to light their fires.

It was hard work but all fires were lit

The Meadow's children were taken through the steps of safe fire lighting.

Once the fire was lit we spoke about how to safely behave around the fire.

The children collected sticks and then toasted marshmallows around the fire.

We showed the children how to safely extinguish a fire.

We collected sticks from the forest school area and joined 3 together.

We used different coloured wool to wrap around the sticks.

We added different items we found in our forest school area.

These now hang proudly in our forest school area.

Making nature ice cubes

We collected items from the forest school area.

We predicted what we thought would happen to all the nature that would freeze.

We looked at the weather forecast to see if our water will freeze tonight.
